alright, here's the deal folks... when I play my PRS tremonti SE thru my amp I get a beautiful, sweet overdrive to my liking; when I play my stepdad's fender stratocaster thru the amp it has this ugly, rank bassy tone to it with and w/o overdrive on... what's up?

Lead 100 Mosfet
So, do any of you guys know anything about a Marshall lead 100 mosfet head? Does it come pretty close to a tube amp and isn't the sound of it more of vintage or modern?

Do all Marshalls retain a vintage sound (even like the DSL and TSL)? Or are Mesas all about the modern sound?

Isn't a JCM900 a hi gain amp? Like couldn't heavy, modern sounds come from a 900?

A Bit About Me...
Name: John

Age: 15

Main Instrument(s): Electric Guitar

Number of Years Playing Said Instruments: About a year and a half. I've been taking lessons for about a year...

Gear: ESP LTD F-300FM. I got her about a year ago from a local music shop. I also have a Digitech RP2000, which is now discontinued, and a 4-track recorder. In addition to my guitar, I own an electric bass guitar, and a drum set.

Your Top 5 Records: Wow... So many to name, but I suppose they go in this order:
1. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
2. Ozzy Osbourne - Tribute
3. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
5. A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

Who has great tone?: Well, the inspiration to my playing is Randy Rhoads. I love his tone. He was so unique in his composure of music. I especially like how he would incorporate almost classical electric guitar into his songs. He truly was an awesome player, and in my eyes, a guitar legend. My second favrite artist is Zakk Wylde. He has amazing tone, and is very unique in his style. I especially like his versions of Mr. Crowley with Ozzy.

i just got a schecter tempest. its used. when i play it clean, and loud, i can hear distortion, that i know is coming from the guitar. actually, it sounds more like static than distortion. the distortion channel on my amp sort of covers it up, but i can still tell its there. do you guys have any ideas whats causing this? ive never had a guitar do this before, so i dont know where to start.

Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends

Who has great tone?:
Jade Puget puts tons of work into finding good tone, although he plays through just a Mesa Dual Recto/ Marshall Cab live, in the studio, if youve seen the guitar tracking vids on their homesite, he puts plenty of work into finding the right tone. As well as I can't help but love Ryan and Phillips guitar tones from SOTY, your tone doesnt get much better after you put a Hughes and Kettner amp with a PRS Custom 22. Finally Teppei, with the Bogner Uberschall and his digital Line 6 mixxed with a 1970's Gibson LP Custom...*drool*

gear review and a few questions
ok, so i got my amp (carvin vintage 16) back from the shop a few days ago. i had it retubed with 2 matched sovtek el84s and two electroharmonix 12ax7s. it sounds really great, almost as good as an old vox ac-15. but what the hell is going on at the carvin factory? i had never closely inspected the original tubes til yesterday. two unmatched sovtek el84s (not a surprise), one sovtek 12ax7, and a groove tubes 12ax7. the groove tubes one is what threw me off. those are considerably more expensive than sovteks, and i think it's kinda weird that there was one in my amp.

anyway, i have narrowed down my search for a suitable fuzz pedal to the fulltone soul-bender (copy of a vox tone bender, used by jimmy page and jeff beck), and a bionix expandora (used by billy gibbons of zz top). i tried out a reissue of the vox tone bender, and i didn't like it at all. it sounded very wimpy and muddy. i'm guessing it's one of those pedals that has to be cranked all the way all the time to get a decent sound. has anyone tried the fulltone version? i haven't ever played through an expandora, but i love billy gibbon's tone, so that's a consideration.

thanks for the input.

Who has great tone?:
Me, suckas. :-)
But honestly, I'd pick the tone of every one of those bands in a totally different way for each. All of those bands use either Marshall or Bogner, and I swear, if you manage to get a bad sound out of either of those amps, then you need to stop playing guitar. Oh, and "The Fucking Champs" have thick ass tone too.

Pink Floyd- DSOTM
Eric Johnson- Ah, Via Musicom

Who has great tone?: Jimmy Page is the physical human embodiment of guitar tone.

I really dig the concept of this community, tone over technique. Maybe thats because I suck from a technical shredder prespective. I tried for awhile to get better at that, but it's such a waste of time. Nobody wants to hear it except people who can't play it and want to be able to, and it isn't important to me to be able to shred. Of course, the people on this forum realize that my not being able to copy Paul Gilbert licks doesn't mean I suck. Gee thanks guys.
12:44 am
Name: Kevyn

Age: 15

Main Instrument(s): Six string electric, six string acoustic and some classical guitar.

Number of Years Playing Said Instruments: 2.5 years.

Gear: Electric: Samick UM3/Ibanez GAX70 through a Dunlop Crybaby Wah then to an Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer and then into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I also have a Digitech RP200 that I don't use because I don't like modeling pedals or amps...
Acoustic: Woods acoustic 6 string.

Your Top 5 Records: Ozzy Osbourne "Blizzard of Ozz"
RATM "The Battle of Los Angles"
AC/DC "Back In Black"
Motley Crue "Greatist Hits"
Led Zeppelin IV

Who has great tone?: I absolutley love Randy Rhoads tone. It is the most unique sound I have heard and it just sounds perfect to me. He used an MXR Distortion + and a MXR 10 band EQ for his tone. I decided to go with a Tube Screamer instead of the Distortion + and then get the EQ so that It wouldn't sound exactly like his, it'll be a little bit different I think.

Your Top 5 Records:
I don't own many records, and the ones I do have are all classical... so I'm gonna have to go with the only real CD I have:
1) The Beatles: Revolver

Who has great tone?: I don't know... I'm knew to this. I haven't heard enough to really make any opinions, so I'm gonna go with me... simply because I rock harder than anyone should. I know this, because I am always right.
